If Today Never Comes

If Today Never Comes

(In Memoriam)

 If today never comes

And I don't wake up to your cheer

And you are so full of fear

If lifeless and numb on my bed I lay

With so much left to say

A little longer I would have loved to stay

So much I wish I'd still be in the fray

If today never comes

And I haven't the time to bid you farewell

Don't you fret e'en when up your eyes well

If your heart is full of sorrow

And you feel the pain in the marrow

If you read my file and you are left with a burrow

I know, I surely know, it shall be well in the morrow

If today never comes

And I do not get the chance to write

Just know I have been called to rite

So many things I had within sight

Yet, here I am, with robes so white

Leaving behind the warmth of the night

And the embers you set alight

If today never comes

Please do not soak in tears for me brother

If I don't get to text in the morning

And you are deep in mourning

Once you have set up my tombstone

Inscribe the following words:-

'I  lived and let die'

For my life has been fragile

And the wind has been taken off my sails

I have made friends and foes along the way

I have lived aplenty

And, I am finally tucked in the safety of eternity

An Odious Debt

It was one of those sully days in the summer when it happened. It had been rainy all morning and the sun was yet to shoot itself out of the clouds. Outside, it was hectic. The grass had been mowed to perfection and some trees had started to fruit. Some birds, chirping into the noontide, remained perched atop of a rowan tree in its effervescent grace. He waited with baited breath. In the minute that followed, he was beginning to grow tired of his heart pounding soundly. He felt as though something ominous was about to unfold. ''Yes, I did it. Once'' All this time, he had remained seated and pregnant with anticipation. Now, he couldn't. A certain feeling of consternation creeped in and he just stared at the message in disbelief. He knew it was always coming to that, and he somehow convinced himself that it wasn't happening. He had always stood on business. He had been confident his past misgivings had been forgiven. His marriage had been one big leap of fait...

Babaa, Mama & I

He passed away on the wee hours of July, the 3rd. Shortly before 4 am or 5 am, or maybe before 9.54 am when I called and he wasn't answering. No one knows the exact time his strength left him or the time his spirit flashed away. He was in high spirits shortly before he retired to bed after watching a game of football. No one knew that was the last time they'd see him alive and unwell. And chained to a wheeler. And groaning in pain.    He had been taken to MTRH the day before his passing for a CT scan, and a MIR scan and a host of other tests that would unravel the malady that had tormented him for years. He was keen to beat it, wrestle it and cast into damnation a condition that had confined him to a wheelchair.    He was in high spirits on their way back after a day with specialists at the Eldoret Hospital. He had been inoculated with tranquilizers and anesthesia. Mostly the extracts from his frame, and torso was rudimentary. His bones had lost their mojo a...

Nova: Papa Says Hello

What the heck? It's been so long. I ran out of ideas. Probably. I lost passion. Maybe. But I am back, and with a thud. I am here to ascertain that indeed I am at the heart of a burgeoning enterprise of words. Like those words that flow from the mouth of an orator so loved by his subjects. Well, that silence was so loud to the extent that they became a sore to the ears. It is commonly good that I apologise to my loyal audience for slumping into a tactical silence. On the yester, something unfolded in emphatic fashion. Something that'd possibly warrant this fanfare. ********* In the wake of the morning, my phone went on with an inexplicable chime. Excitedly, I pulled out of bed and stretching beyond a diadem of clothes arraigned on the table, I reached for it. I was anxious, like a cockerel on a hazy Christmas Eve. Outside, an orchestra of birds animated the neighbourhood. I peered through the lettering of the message I  had received as my hearth thumped. “...
