Don't Have the Sun in You Killed Yet

“Life is filled with unanswered questions, but it is the courage to seek those answers that continues to give meaning to life. You can spend your life wallowing in despair, wondering why you were the one who was led to the way strewn with pain, or you can be grateful that you are strong enough to survive it.” -J.D Stroube, ‘Caged by Damnation’ ***** Thomas Edison, the guy who invented the light bulb, was the most resilient soul I have ever read about in the entirety of my life. His patience outwits Abraham Lincoln’s ascension to the helm of American administration and consequently went ahead to become the most revered of American statesmen. Resilience aside, failure conjured his lab in tufts he would wish away as he assembled his filaments. What an unwavering flicker of hope and determination he carried with him every time his bulbs failed to illuminate. He just wouldn’t exasperate.  Waxing up my thoughts after a lousy weekend, I found myself on a high plane of mot...

24 At Last

June 28.A quintessential Sunday morning, I am up. Probably everyone around my neighborhood is awake.I decide- imma go to church. Vent my frustrations to the Good Lord. Thank Him for the cusps of air in my lungs. Each day, when I wake up alive and kicking, albeit reluctantly, I am so thankful. My life has been treacherous journey. ‘The goin’ ain’t been crystal clear’. So many turmoils have buffeted my life, a close to two and half decades that I have traversed the voyage of life. Anyway, even the best sailors must have weathered tempestuous storms for them to be crowned with a diadem of flowers. My mama told me of   the sheer twists and turns that my infancy and my childhood took. I was dumbfounded. I owe it to God for the twenty four years I have sweltered around this daunting world. Family too is an important ingredient in my own mix. Without their unwavering support and their relentless encouragement, honestly I think I would have ended some place else. Think of the time...

June and its Blues

On June 1, 1963, Jomo led Kenyans in celebrating the annexation of the nation from the jaws of colonialism. It was such a joyous occasion, I am informed. In the countryside particularly, the peasants were in such a pompous mood. Nevertheless, I am happy to have been born years after colonial subjugation had long been put to a close and a government of the people in line with the latest democratic fashion in town was operational. Honestly, other than personal freedoms, every other government that has taken over the reins of power has taken us for some tomfoolery. Sadly, there’s nothing much to celebrate five score years after attaining self- governance from British imperialists. However, I would be such an   ingrate if I fail to pragmatically appreciate the efforts that our freedom fighters partook on our behalf. Precisely, that is the reason I will juggle my memory this month ever time I watch the late night news. I will thank God for ferocious Kimathi and the relentless Ke...

For the Love of Uhunye

Forget Hugo Chavez or the Jose' Mujica's of this world.Enter the new love and whiz kid,Mr Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta fondly baptized by Kenya's twitter amicus as Uhunye . On his way to the departure lounge,he stole the show again. This time showing his selfless self by wittingly presenting his tools of trade to his deputy Mr Ruto.By invoking a constitutional provision and consequently appointing the latter as the head whilst attending a status conference at the Hague, criticism as well as appreciation were rife. Baba's aides were as usual up in arms that the president short stint at the Hague did not,at most, warrant such fan fare But that's just an exception.Let's all rack our memories.A couple of weeks ago,( I was, albeit reluctant to hit the keyboard then for fear of being called a sycophant) Uhuru pledged that the government would cater for a girl who, through the help of her colleagues had launched an appeal of support through national television citing it as a...

Of Infamy,Terror and Anarchy

Accra,Ghana ;the venue of the recently concluded conference on insurgency. And the student leaders across  Africa congregated here to irk their discontent ,contempt and what have you concerning the advent of militancy in this part of the world. Good gracious, this gave me the audacity to write down just the synopsis part of it- for the world to scan, criticize and adjudge  as green or false light. In any case that be the essence of literature In Mpeketoni, schools, motels and police stations have been converted into a rubble ,concrete scattered helluva the place is the lone visible trace of tranquility that barricades the area.Otherwise, ashes and charred pieces of wood lie unperturbed in the ground Elsewhere,Chibok girls are yet to be found despite worldwide uproar concerning their incessant seizure by Islamic militants;Boko Haram a couple of months ago. Then, there was Westgate siege in uptown Nairobi. Most recently is the Lamu transitive attacks that have left many ...

Fare Thee Well My Friend

A n excerpt from the Lion king reads; “It’s the circle of life, and it moves us all, through hope and despair, through faith and love, ‘till we find our place, on the path.”    Slowly, these words begin to sink into my temples. Tortured, tormented and pestered by a frightening prognosis was the last she felt on her frame. And now, she lies still, eyes shut forever, mute and numb she reclines. It was just the other day she’d call me. Perhaps to let me know, at best she cared for me. It’s farfetched to do just that now. Sad, distraught and empty I feel. Meted with an avalanche of piety with tears down my cheeks, I question-Why? A year ago, we’d sit by her place and she’d speak her mind out.in her, I saw her dreams come to fruition. Pegged to her ambitions was that strong desire and impulsion to do big in life. Perchance, this is what catapulted her walks and willed her. Yet she’s no more. She had a heart of gold and tenacity of a lion. Moreover,...
